Vocational Education and Training: Programs and Outcomes. An Overview. Australian Vocational Education & Training Statistics, 2000.
National Centre for Vocational Education Research, Leabrook (Australia).
In the year 2000, approximately 1.75 million Australians (13.2% of the country's population) undertook some form of vocational education and training (VET). Of all VET students, 75.5% undertook training with Technical and Further Education (TAFE) and other government providers versus 13.0% with community providers and 11.5% with other registered providers. Approximately 15% of Australia's VET students were apprentices enrolled in VET courses for off-the-job training. Most (91.3%) students studied part time. The most popular courses were from the business, administration, and economics field of study, attracting 20% of all VET students. The majority of students (65.4%) also undertook courses leading to a qualification recognized under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), with nearly two-thirds of them undertaking a course leading to an AQF certificate III or higher. Nearly 90% of VET subject enrollments that were assessed resulted in a successful outcome. The percentages of TAFE graduates by employment status before and after training as of 2001 were as follows: working (full or part time), 66.6% before and 73.4% after; unemployed (looking for work), 13.5% before and 11.9% after; and not in the labor force, 14.1% before and 14.2% after. The data indicate that VET training may help students advance in their careers or move to new occupations. (Contains 9 figures and 3 tables.) (MN)
