Space Shuttle. Teacher's Guide [and] Student Material.
Butler, Della
The teacher's guide and student materials provide elementary and junior high school students with an understanding of the space shuttle as a new kind of transportation for conveying goods and performing services in space. The unit is appropriate for a learning center approach, individual instruction, or use with the entire class. It is organized into two sections. In section one the student learns the main part of the shuttle. Section two deals with the uses of the shuttle and how it will be beneficial to consumers. Students label the parts of an orbiter on worksheets, write newspaper stories, analyze the necessity for recycling, examine the contributions of the shuttle, design a factory to be built in space, and locate companies assigned to manufacture various parts of the shuttle. Other activities include defining terms related to the shuttle and reading an article, "Moonwalk and Beyond" by Isaac Asimov. The teacher's guide includes objectives, materials needed, reproducible activity sheets, and pre- and posttests with keys. (KC)
