The draft of a new syllabus for Latin instruction in New York State public schools emphasizes language instruction for communication. The syllabus is intended to serve as a basis for local activities such as review of current local programs, development of local programs to meet new standards, selection and acquisition of support materials, articulation of local offerings, and evaluation of student performance. The guide includes an introductory discussion of the syllabus' philosophy, rationale, goals, and purpose. A discussion of Latin for communication follows, including sections on the components of communication (topics, situations, functions, and specific proficiencies in reading, writing, listening, speaking, language, and culture), the development of language skills (grammar, vocabulary, derivation, and word study), and the development of cultural awareness of the Greco-Roman civilization (in the areas of literature, myths and legends, art and architecture, history and public life, and daily life). Three lists of "checkpoint" learning outcomes are provided, and notes on curriculum development at the local level, staff development, and implications for instruction in each proficiency area are presented.
