Ways to write colorful, accurate, and timely stories are explained with the emphasis on the differences between broadcast and newspaper stories. Other subjects treated are sources of news (including explanations of how the Associated Press copy works and how to conduct telephone interviews), arrest and trial procedures, and the issues of libel, slander and good taste. Press coverage of civil disturbances is also discussed. Rounding out the book are details on putting together a five-minute newscast. The emphasis throughout is on using real-life "hot" stories, on riots, drug raids, etc., rather than "safe" events like beauty contests and city council meetings.
