Perceptions of the Effectiveness of Interactive Whiteboards on Student Engagement

This study examined the effectiveness of interactive whiteboards on student engagement. Perceptions from 108 middle school students and one middle school teacher were analyzed to answer the research question: What are the perceptions of middle school students and one middle school teacher regarding student engagement during lessons using an interactive whiteboard? Student and teacher-researcher ratings of levels of engagement during lessons using an interactive whiteboard and video analysis of those lessons indicated many implications for educators. This study provided data that showed strong and immediate teaching and learning benefits for using an interactive whiteboard, including promoting high student engagement levels. This study also indicated higher engagement levels for students in regular math classes compared to students in advanced math classes and indicated that student engagement levels changed over time during lessons using an interactive whiteboard.
