Parents as Literacy Supporters (PALS) is an interactive, culturally responsive, family literacy program that brings parents of kindergartners into the classroom as partners in their children's education. Co-developed by Jim Anderson of the University of British Columbia and Fiona Morrison, Director of Family Literacy and Early Learning at 2010 Legacies Now (a not-for-profit society in Vancouver, Canada), PALS is designed to build on what parents and caregivers are doing at home to support their children's development of reading, writing, and numeracy skills (Anderson and Morrison 2000). Each session begins with a parent orientation to a specific early-learning topic followed by an hour in the classroom, where parents and children work together through a variety of theme-related activity centers. This article will describe how culturally relevant pedagogy and activities enhance understanding in a PALS session on early mathematics.
