The Internet Guide for New Users.
Dern, Daniel P.
This guide will help the new user get started on the Internet. It explains what the Internet is, how to use it, and how to think like an Internet user. Part 1, "Ramping Up, Getting Started," covers the basics of getting access to the Internet and general information about it. It includes a review of the history and technology of the Internet, some information about Unix, and how to get a user account. Part 2 explains the four basic aspects of: (1) electronic mail; (2) the Usenet; (3) remote login; and (4) file transfer. Part 3, "Navigating the Internet," explains the facilities that make it easier to use the Internet. Part 4 talks about being a good citizen on the Internet and considers costs. Part 5, "Commercial Services, Archives, Communities, and Miscellany," describes a range of services and resources available through the Internet. Five appendixes provide some supplemental detail for Internet use. A list of 30 resources and a glossary are included. Fifteen figures and one table illustrate the discussion. (SLD)
