At Issue: An Award-Winning Community College Instructor's Approach to Teaching and Learning
Welsh, Hilarie B.
Community College Enterprise, v21 n1 p66-78 Spr 2015
The author presents themes that were identified from a case study that focused on the instructional practices of an award-winning community college composition/literature teacher. The themes for this case study focus on the importance of student-centered learning which involve: (1) writing peer response strategies; (2) student engagement in using writing center support; (3) portfolio assessment requiring student metacognition; and (4) rigorous, clearly defined expectations. In addition, this case study emphasizes that collaboration and communication among colleagues and continuous self-reflection by instructors promote teaching and learning improvement in the classroom. The lessons learned from this research may be used to enhance instruction across disciplines.
