Navigating a Campus Racial Crisis: Building Capacity, Leading through Trauma and the Recovery Process
Kezar, Adrianna; Fries-Britt, Sharon
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v52 n2 p89-93 2020
In this article, the authors describe the leadership needed to steward campuses through a racial crisis. The message is clear: leaders should be working now to build their capacity to deal with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The work the authors describe in capacity building and trauma recovery addresses very different skills than most campus leaders have, requiring major learning and retooling. This article provides two frameworks for administrators, faculty, staff, and students for developing capacity for dealing with a racial crisis and the resulting trauma.
