Organization is essential to just about every sort of operation, but it is especially important in advocacy work. Without organization, an advocacy group may be nothing more than several individuals who agree on some large issue and try to react to threats to what they believe in. A well-functioning advocacy group has to have common goals and a common purpose, and it has to have a way to communicate a common message systematically and effectively over the long haul. With organization, advocates can be focused, unified, proactive, and effective--and a force to be reckoned with. That sentiment is exactly what Dr. James Strate, CEO/superintendent of Autry Technology Center in Norman, Oklahoma, envisioned when he began Autry's CEO Network in 1996. Autry is a career and technical education (CTE) center that serves high school and adult students, local business and industry, as well as thousands of people each year through online learning opportunities. The network Strate created at Autry targeted influential employers who would hire Autry's students and who needed continued training for their incumbent workers. The goal was to make these influential employers, speaking with a common message, powerful allies who would establish personal relationships with legislators and give Autry's system credibility with other lawmakers and the community at large. This article provides a brief summary of the steps Autry has used to turn business partnerships into consistent and powerful legislative advocates who have successfully supported the system through the long haul.
