As state and federal legislatures increase scrutiny and further constrain allocation of tax revenues for education, the need for educational institutions to generate money from other public and private sources becomes increasingly important. Educators from pre-kindergarten through college are now frequently asked to take active roles in generating revenue, not just for elective purposes, but to offset budget constraints and shortfalls for primary classes. The need to generate revenue is not a new situation for sport programs, whether in private or public settings, since such programs have long relied to some extent on fundraising to meet growth needs. When sport programs grow, they often expand to include more participants, and revenues generated by ticket and merchandise sales, concessions, and advertisements may then fall short of the needs of the program. In such cases, sport managers, like educators, seek more private giving to meet program goals. Since fundraising is becoming increasingly important to support physical education and sport programs, providing educational experiences in fundraising within the professional preparation curriculum is prudent. This article provides a brief overview of educational fundraising and describes strategies for integrating fundraising lessons into physical and sport education courses, particularly at the college level. It offers suggestions to support charitable organizations as a central element of these strategies and discusses how such organizations can provide excellent learning experiences for students in physical and sport education.
