The Center for Teen Empowerment (TE) is a Boston-based nonprofit organization that trains and supports youth, and adults who work with youth, to develop more inclusive, healthier, and more productive communities, schools, and institutions. Programming is based on an approach to youth organizing known as the Teen Empowerment Model, which is designed to provide a broad range of youth with opportunities to access legitimate forms of power through working as agents of positive social and institutional change. Youth become involved with Teen Empowerment (TE) at six sites: three in communities (in Somerville, Massachusetts; Rochester, New York; and the South End/Lower Roxbury area of Boston) and three in Boston public high schools. One of the central components of the model is TE's interactive meeting format, a methodology for building relationships and changing attitudes that provides the structure for all TE group meetings. Throughout the field of community building, there is a broad recognition of the need to build relationships. TE's interactive methods are powerful tools that community building practitioners can use to achieve this essential goal. The projects described in this chapter have been successful because there exists this practical system for establishing positive relationships as the foundation for effective community building. This aspect of TE's work is described in the organization's book, "Moving Beyond Icebreakers: An Innovative Approach to Group Facilitation, Learning, and Action," which contains more than three hundred detailed descriptions of community building activities and explains how to use them in a comprehensive interactive context.
