Black Spaces: Examining the Writing Major at an Urban HBCU
Taylor, Hill
Composition Studies, v35 n1 p99-112 Spr 2007
In "The Mis-Education of the Negro," Carter Woodson issues a mandate for a different and original program of education for African-Americans, specific to their own conditions. If educators, the author opines, are to take this mandate into consideration when designing and implementing appropriate curricula and pedagogy, then they must start paying attention to the gritty materialities of the places their students inhabit and come from, the places they hope to go, and especially the worlds they aim to create. In this article, the author aims to provide a useful theoretical frame for the construction of writing major curriculum at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and elsewhere. On purpose and with clear intention, the author does not provide specific essential components of a writing major curriculum; rather, he outlines the mindset from which such a curriculum should spring. Whether people have recognized it or not, they are of the multitude and a solidarity of differences and uniqueness is the only route to better worlds. By remembering that places and spaces differ, people can construct haptic curricula that are contingent on difference and recognition. (Contains 8 notes.)
