Secondary School Advanced Mathematics, Chapter 3, Formal Geometry. Student's Text.
Stanford Univ., CA. School Mathematics Study Group.
This text is the second of five in the Secondary School Advanced Mathematics (SSAM) series which was designed to meet the needs of students who have completed the Secondary School Mathematics (SSM) program, and wish to continue their study of mathematics. This volume is devoted to a rigorous development of theorems in plane geometry from 22 postulates and definitions. Topics covered include perpendicularity and parallelism, congruence, relations among angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Proofs of theorems are given in paragraph form. Several proofs are left to students; advice on how to begin a proof (e.g., draw several pictures) is frequently offered. Several exercises require students to recognize characteristics of proofs such as the difference between existence and uniqueness proofs. The many exercises included in this text vary considerably in difficulty and purpose; some involve straightforward applications while others require integration and problem solving. (SD)
