Photography is a creative art that continues to advance through technological innovations. Smart phones have made photography a nearly daily occurance, and people have become quite accustomed to zooming in and taking photos. This article explains how elementary teachers can harness a much "bigger" technology application--GigaPan--to help first-grade students zoom in on the natural world of a school garden. GigaPan refers to panoramic "zoomable" images as well as the technology used to produce these images, which can be viewed on the GigaPan website. The authors have found that students love to zoom these images on the classroom interactive whiteboard to discover details. Through this article, teachers will learn how to use a rich database of images to enhance science instruction, such as by capturing change over time and examining structures and processes in the natural world that may otherwise go unnoticed with the naked eye. Furthermore, the article enables teachers who do not have a school garden to engage students in garden-based learning (Blair 2009). The instruction follows the 5E learning cycle format (BSCS 2016) with evaluation (assessment) embedded in the first four phases. Instructional time varies depending on the extent of observation and discussion as well as the integration of other disciplines. The engagement, exploration, and explanation phases each require 40-60 minutes; the elaboration phase encompasses an extended investigation over eight weeks and requires at least 120 minutes (but can be abbreviated as described in the article).
