From "Mentor" to "Role Model": Scaling the Involvement of STEM Professionals through Role Model Videos
Ware, Jennifer; Stein, Sarah
Journal of Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia, v22 n2 p209-223 Mar 2013
Mentors and role models can play a significant role in high school students' motivation to pursue specific careers later in life. Although the use of role models in the classroom is an important research topic, little research has been conducted on scaling up STEM role models reach through the use of video vignettes. This essay outlines a series of best practices to extend the use of role models from single to multiple classrooms in the form of pedagogically scaffolded video profiles. It also outlines key distinctions between the "mentor" and "role model" that hindered initial STEM professional participation in the project. (Contains 3 footnotes.)
