A Profile of 1984 Homebuyers. Teachers Instructional Packet, TIP-2A, Spring 1987.
Texas A and M Univ., College Station. Texas Real Estate Research Center.
Part of a series of classroom aids designed for real estate instructors, this instructional packet was developed to help real estate students understand the characteristics of Texas homebuyers. First, a summary profile of homebuyers is presented, indicating that: (1) the typical 1984 Texas homebuyer was married, was between 25 and 34 years old, and had a median family income of $43,500, more than double the median family income for Texans in general; (2) homebuyers had previously owned a home and were likely to purchase their new, larger residence in the same county or metropolitan area as their previous home; (3) their main reason for moving related to tax and investment advantages; (4) most spent three months or less looking for their new home and seriously considered less than five homes before deciding; (5) their choice was typically a three bedroom, two bath single-family home with 1,638 square feet; (6) the most important factors influencing choice were purchase price, layout and design, financial terms, and the neighborhood; and (7) the median price was $74,762 and the average mortgage payment was $782 per month. Next, information on the methods and findings of the 1984 Texas Homebuyers Survey is presented for the instructors, highlighting methodological features and research findings covered in 22 accompanying overhead masters. Finally, an evaluation form for the module is presented. (AYC)
