"Name That Gene" is a simple classroom activity that incorporates bioinformatics (available biological information) into the classroom using "Basic Logical Alignment Search Tool (BLAST)." An excellent classroom activity involving bioinformatics and "BLAST" has been previously explored using sequences from bacteria, but it is tailored for college students. "Name That Gene" employs similar, simplified principles that can be accomplished in a standard high school period or two. In "Name That Gene", students are provided partial nucleotide sequences to enter into "BLAST" to identify human genes. "Name That Gene" fosters scientific literacy, as set forth by the "Benchmarks for Science Literacy" (1993) and "National Science Education Standards (NSES)" (1996). The "Benchmarks" delineate that students should understand the increasing function of computers in processing large amounts of information in medicine and science. One goal of this activity is to provide students with an opportunity to appreciate the power of the Internet and computers in scientific research. "Name That Game" encompasses a broad range of concepts outlined in "NSES" Content Standard C (Molecular Basis of Heredity) and Benchmark 5 (The Living Environment). (Contains 5 figures.)
