This annual compilation presents four papers which focus on significant developments in higher education in nineteenth-century Europe and the United States. An introduction to the volume by Roger L. Geiger notes commonalities across the four papers and major trends in historical research on institutions of higher education. The first paper, by Nancy Beadie, is "From Academy to University in New York State: The Genesee Institutions and the Importance of Capital to the Success of an Idea, 1848-1871." This article's focus on the relationship between Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and Genesee College engages larger issues of the period, including curriculum change to include scientific and modern courses as well as effects of religious affiliation. The next article, "'We Desired Our Future Rulers To Be Educated Men': South Carolina College, the Defense of Slavery, and the Development of Secessionist Politics" by Michael Sugrue, focuses on the role of college president Thomas Cooper and political changes before and during the Civil War. The third article is by Thomas Kevin B. Cherry and is titled "Bringing Science to the South: The School for the Application of Science to the Arts at the University of North Carolina." This article questions the conventional view of a literary, nonscientific emphasis in Southern higher education, noting the efforts of president David Swain to create a program in applied science. The final article, "Patterns of Access to Modern European Universities: Rates of Enrollment" (Fritz Ringer), looks at trends during this period in Europe.
