Rural Learning: A Practical Guide to Developing Learning Opportunities in the Countryside.
Payne, John
This guide to rural learning is intended to help those developing learning opportunities in the United Kingdom countryside--teachers, program organizers, project and development workers, and health and housing workers. Section 1 supplies up-to-date facts and figures and useful information about living in the rural context. It highlights issues that may provide the basis for useful learning activities. A checklist is provided to build up one's own local picture. Section 2 describes useful and relevant approaches aimed at developing rural learning. Topics are context, adult learning, what people want to learn, getting involved, partnerships and providers, networking, development and progression, and looking to the future. Section 3 provides practical suggestions for putting ideas into practice. It covers methods to define needs; village appraisals; supporting adult learning: rules and regulations; publicity and communication; effective working and evaluation; organizing events; and time and managing oneself. Each subsection begins with a short explanation; "quick tips" summarize the main points. For Sections 1-3, questions are provided at the end of key sub-sections to get one thinking about specific issues and responses in relation to one's own area. Section 4, Resources, has two parts. Part A is a "Who's Who in Education" that can be customized for one's own reference. Part B contains a list of agencies, books, and Web sites. (YLB)
