Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v5 n1 p31-44 2010
The purpose of the project was to allow participants to document, critique, and change their family and community conditions through photographs and stories of their everyday lives. This study used photovoice, a participatory action research methodology, with 7 women from La Carpio, Costa Rica. The women were given cameras and asked to photograph community life and then critically reflect on the images with one another. The process empowered the women by affirming their community strengths and providing them with an avenue, through photographs and stories, for voicing their needs to policymakers and community leaders. Six themes were identified using interpretive inquiry to illustrate the experiences documented in the photovoice project, with "fighting to survive" as the overarching one. (Contains 6 figures.)
