When students miss classes for university activities such as athletic and academic events, they inevitably miss important class material. Students can get notes from their peers or visit professors to find out what they missed, but when students miss new and challenging material these steps are sometimes not enough. Screen capture and recording software--such as Camtasia, Captivate, or an open source alternative--provide an excellent answer to this dilemma. These programs allow teachers to capture every move they make in a program. They can show students how to open a program, create a date file, enter data, and so forth. Learning a new program can take time, but it can be worth the time saved. Having screen captured videos provides students who were in class a reference in case they forget the material, which they often do, and provides those who missed class the opportunity to learn the material without losing additional class time. In some cases, the videos can even be used in place of in-class instruction when time is limited. Importantly, the professor will not have to re-teach material, spend additional class time on the material, or lose students to the abyss.
