Supporting Our Artistically Talented
Dupuis, Diane L.
Understanding Our Gifted, v16 n3 p5-7 Spr 2004
A talented child's motivation and artistic gift can suffer when the environment at home and at school are inadequately supportive. It's crucial, therefore, for parents and teachers to understand that any child's involvement in the arts can enhance overall success in academics and in later life. It's just as important to learn about the many ways in which parents and teachers can support artistically talented students. Parents who seek real-life examples of the positive influence of the arts should investigate Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA), a fine arts boarding high school in Michigan where students earn an impressive number of National Merit Scholarships and Advanced Placement credits. Students also earn a disproportionate number of prizes in statewide and nationwide competitions in French, German, and math. Focus on the arts does not upstage academic excellence; they take their bows together. In this article, the author discusses how to support parents and teachers can provide crucial support for artistically talented students. She suggests that by working together, parents and teachers can devise an environment that will help a young artist thrive.
