Warner, Laverne; Weiss, Sara
Kappa Delta Pi Record, v41 n3 p124-127 Spr 2005
This article explains the importance of alphabet books in early reading development. Alphabet books encourage literacy development in the following ways: (1) unlock the symbols of language; (2) connect knowledge to other sources; (3) provide book usage knowledge to young children; (4) complement children's enjoyment of books; and (5) aid early readers in becoming independent readers and writers. The article presents several suggestions for supporting alphabet book use with children. Table 1 lists 53 alphabet books for preschoolers. Table 2 lists 21 alphabet books for emergent and beginning readers.
