Factor analysis and multiple regression are two major approaches used to look at functional age, which takes account of the extensive variation in the rate of physiological and psychological maturation throughout life. To examine the role of racial or cultural influences on the measurement of functional age, a battery of 12 tests concentrating on cognitive and perceptual-cognitive variables, and a background information questionnaire were administered to 81 White and 84 minority (25 Blacks, 59 Hispanics) adults. Principal components factor analysis was conducted on the battery of tests for the entire subject pool, and for the whites and minorities separately. Multiple regression analysis was performed, regressing chronological age on the test battery. The results from these two analyses suggest the appearance of differing factor structures and regression equations between the minority and white subsamples. In addition, they suggest that results from pooled sample analyses may not be representative of the separate subsample analyses. It may be concluded from these data that the statistical procedures used to define functional age yield results which are not invariant across ethnic groups, and this may call into question the generality of the procedures used to assess functional age.
