Enhancement of Pedagogical Skills in Nigerian Schools through Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Issues for the Future
Aluede, Oyaziwo
Research in Education, v89 p90-92 May 2013
The history of information and communication technology (ICT) in Nigerian schools is patchy. The first experience of Internet services started about 1990 with University of Ilorin through the assistance of McMaster University in Canada. Currently, though, many staff members of universities in Nigeria have email accounts, and over forty-four universities have registered domain names, yet ICT is still not part of every curriculum, especially at higher education levels (Aguele, 2007). So, in most Nigerian institutions of learning, one is likely to find lectures delivered with the use of a chalkboard. Nigeria is experiencing a severe shortage of ICT skills and personnel necessary for taking advantage of new and emerging technologies in the knowledge society. This is further compounded by a weak ICT backbone in the country, poor and expensive bandwidth provision as well as poor and obsolete infrastructure and services in the educational system (Federal Ministry of Education, 2009). This article discusses Nigeria's efforts to integrate ICT in teaching and learning processes, as well as future directions in integrating ICT at all levels of education.
