Science teaching practices at the Long Island School for the Gifted emphasize hands-on experiments where children do the work and the teacher assists learning. This approach bypasses the reading/writing barrier that prevents some children from learning science. Many science experiments are described, including a first-grade lesson on using thermometers, a kindergarten lesson which involves playing with "traffic" lights (colored light bulbs) with light-emitting diodes, and a second-grade lesson on wave motion. The use of problem solving is addressed through experiments in which students manage, using materials found in the classroom, to float a potato, and develop a way to throw a raw egg in the air and have it drop without breaking. Experiments in electronics, chemistry, and biology which were performed during a parents' visit to the third-grade classroom are described. Also included is a diary of a teacher's experiences with a sixth-grade "mechanical genius." (JDD)
