As blogs light up with lively conversations about iPads, netbooks, and smart phones, it's easy to forget one major roadblock to preparing all children for the future: the digital divide. Although middle-class students often take high-speed Internet access for granted, a full 65 percent of Americans who make less than $25,000 a year lack broadband access. This lack means that students in these homes spend less time developing important 21st century skills with computers and online research. In this article, Celano and Neuman share their observations from a case study of a low-income Philadelphia neighborhood. In this neighborhood where most children do not have computer access at home, students must rely on libraries and community organizations for access. Unfortunately, these groups do not offer enough computers to meet the demand, and those computers that are available are often locked up or out-of-date. Celano and Neuman enjoin schools to provide greater access to computers and to offer more explicit instruction in strategies for computer use. This article addresses opportunity gaps with a focus on urban schools.
