Glashagel, Jerry; And Others
Teaching methods and learning activities are suggested to help youth develop value-decision skills and have positive growth experiences in value-exploration groups. The document is intended for use by staff of youth and family organizations as they develop values education workshops. The document is presented in six chapters. Chapter I introduces values education and explains how leaders of youth and family organizations can use teaching techniques described in the document. Chapter II discusses basic values education concepts, including values, valuing, values clarification and analysis, and values commitment. Chapter III emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive atmosphere when teaching about values. Chapter IV presents teaching strategies and learning activities to help individuals explore thoughts and feelings about values, make value choices, link values to actions, and share individual values with the group. Activities involve participants in group discussions, learning games, writing exercises, filling in worksheets, drawing pictures and symbols, role playing, and interviewing other group members. Chapter V suggests ways to plan a values education training session. The final chapter lists publishers who produce values education materials. (DB)
