Strategies for Teaching the Process Orientation in Sport and Education Domains
Osteen-Munch, Deborah
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v89 n5 p53-57 2018
Youth tend to focus more on the outcome of a goal than on the process. An outcome orientation places a heavy emphasis on the comparison to others and the finishing placement. A process orientation, or a focus on the present and the steps needed to perform successfully, allows a person to pay attention to the lessons learned, the enjoyment of participation, and the character development along the way. Students or athletes who are introduced to the process orientation at a young age have the ability to reap these benefits and develop a more helpful perspective on the task at hand. The process orientation can be difficult to teach because it is intangible, it often cannot be quantified, and often it does not have a clearly defined end. This article provides educators and coaches ways to assess current levels of process and outcome orientations, as well as interactive strategies to teach students or athletes about the process orientation. Additionally, the article acknowledges that both outcome and process orientations can serve a beneficial purpose at different times. It is best to learn how to shift from one orientation to another to navigate the present circumstances.
