Considering the prevalence of mobile technologies among secondary students, this case study examined a new mode for reflective writing: mobile journaling. Because reflective writing is spontaneous and continuous, mobile journaling, using a mobile device to record, store, and share personal reflections, is an innovative approach to improve the quality and quantity of students' written reflections. For this study, 109 secondary students were assigned a reflective journal and were given a choice to write using traditional notebooks or using applications on their mobile devices. The results of this study indicated that when given a choice, students are more inclined to opt for learning technologies that reflect their digital communication habits. Respondents reported that mobile journaling was more convenient than traditional journaling and improved their self-expression based on their common communication habits. Finally, the choice for completion of reflections, either digital or traditional, was highlighted as an important consideration which was due in part to Internet and Wi-Fi availability.
