The reading and literacy focus of a unit that centers on chocolate can provide a context for using the interpretive mode of the communication standard from the "National Standards in Foreign Language Education." This article presents a thematic unit that is applicable to all languages and adaptable to any level. Inspired by Woodlands' all-school theme, Saving the rainforest and chocolate, Milwaukee Public Schools reading resource consultant, Sandra Ruesink, and the author coordinated the unit and chose chocolate, a tantalizing high-interest topic, rich in culture connections and confectionery delights, to engage students and teachers. They chose six reading strategies to help students process reading, reinforce specific reading skills and demonstrate interpretive mode competencies. The six reading strategies, namely (1) Tea Party; (2) Say Something; (3) NICK List; (4) RAFT; (5) Word Book; and (6) Concept Frame, not only help students process and understand what they read but also activate language for speaking. The six reading strategies are discussed.
