Mwabu: Interactive Education in Zambia
Gordon, Jenny; Postlewhite, Kerry
Childhood Education, v93 n4 p289-291 2017
Africa has more people younger than 20 years old than anywhere in the world, and the continent's population is set to double to two billion by 2050. Asking whether that is a challenge or an opportunity isn't really the right question because it is both. For Mwabu, an education technology company born and bred in Zambia, the more important question is what innovative education solutions can minimize the challenge and maximize the opportunity. Like many countries in the region, Zambia has high primary school drop-out levels; children leaving primary education with low levels of literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills; and a growing shortage of trained and motivated teachers. Just to ensure that every child has access to quality education, sub-Saharan African countries need to recruit some 350,000 teachers every year. This article describes how Mwabu used technology to bring the Zambian primary curriculum to life and to address a host of challenges. The company has an ambitious and exciting vision for the future, expanding further into other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, seeking to reach 100 million learners. Mwabu believes that it is their job to unleash African talent with the right technology, learning materials, pedagogy, and training.
