Better Science: Building Primary-Secondary Links. Curriculum Guide 10.
Barber, Brenda, Comp.; Michell, Mick, Comp.
This publication is one in a series of 12 giving the recommendations that were made for a broad and balanced education program in science for young people. This guide attempts to answer the questions regarding what science is taught in primary schools, what skills good primary science gives children, and how secondary schools build on primary science. The guide was written basically for secondary teachers but is of interest to all who care for science in primary schools. Following an introduction, section one identifies some of the problems such as safety education and primary teachers training in science. Section two discusses organization and science in the classroom and section three looks at primary science policy at the two levels of the school. Section four addresses liaison for children, teachers, departments, and schools, possible outcomes, what other people have done, and a conclusion. An appendix summarizes the findings of a teachers' group in Croydon, England (the Primary-Secondary Interface). Further readings and references are presented. (RT)
