The Accidental Systems Librarian.
Gordon, Rachel Singer
This book offers advice and information to help librarians manage and interact with computer technology in their institutions. Chapters 1 and 2 provide a background in systems librarianship, outlining the skills that may be needed and defining the specialty. Chapters 3 and 4 show how traditional library skills such as the organization of knowledge and research techniques form the foundation of a successful career in systems. Chapter 5 covers networking, including online discussion groups, interest groups, associations and conferences, informal networks, developing networking skills, and collaboration. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss learning and teaching, focusing on instructional techniques for teaching others and independent study skills for extending one's own knowledge. Chapter 8 addresses more advanced topics, describing how library systems personnel can tackle managing large projects and managing systems staff. Chapter 9 emphasizes the real-world aspect of working with library systems and provides information on finding a job in the field or related field and dealing with its attendant stresses. The conclusion provides a copy of the Accidental Systems Librarian Survey and resources for further study, including recommended reading and Web sites. Each chapter includes a list of works cited. Contains an index. (MES)
