The Discovery Way
Hamlin, Theresa
Exceptional Parent, v35 n9 p78-81 Sep 2005
At the Center for Discovery (The Center), a private, non-profit agency 80 miles northwest of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, children are growing and learning at their own pace, in their own way, with careful attention focused on communication and social/emotional development. Children with autism are being educated to be social beings, who are competent in their ability to interact, play and socialize with others. This is no easy feat considering that the children enrolled in the program at The Center are considered the most severe on the spectrum of autism. This article describes the Discovery Way, a method of education that is specialized and offered by The Center. The Discovery Way of education offers a unique approach that combines the best teaching approaches available with the most competent team of professionals in an outdoor, highly motivating and engaging atmosphere, where the difficult task of learning comes more naturally and with less resistance.
