The mentoring model, in which an "expert" develops an in-depth, sharing relationship with a student, is highly appropriate for gifted students who manifest strong performance discrepancies in academic areas, whose interpersonal peer relationships are weak, who suffer from a physical or emotional handicap, or are talented in nontraditional areas.
