Welder
Tech Directions, v72 n9 p26-27 Apr 2013
Welding is used to create many things, from cars, trucks, and motorcycles to rail cars, ships, aircraft, rockets, and space stations. Welding is huge in the construction industry, too. Skyscrapers, bridges, and highways would be impossible to build without welding, as would oil and natural-gas pipelines, offshore oil platforms, wind turbines, and solar panels. Welders help install and maintain boilers, antipollution systems, and piping for industrial, commercial, and residential facilities. Welding is even used by artists to create sculptures and decorative items. The influence of welding is so broad, especially where automation is concerned, that students can learn a career shaped around their particular interests. This article highlights everything students need to know about careers for welders--wages, responsibilities, education and skills needed, career advancement possibilities, and more.
