A project in which student groups create a 10-minute radio broadcast consisting of a song, commercials, a news report, and a commentary is presented. The purpose of the project is to teach students to be selective media users while also teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The teacher introduction offers suggestions for carrying out the project and lists concepts related to each part of the broadcast. Instructional materials include: creative writing assignments and other activities which illustrate that different methods of communication are used with different audiences; worksheets to be completed for each part of the broadcast; an exercise on communications skills needed for different occupations; exercises related to advertising techniques, to the differences between fact and opinion in news reporting, and to persuasive techniques used in commentaries; and a form to be used for the script of the broadcast.
