The Educator's Digest of Reform: A Comparison of 16 Recent Proposals for Improving America's Schools.

This digest of recent proposals for educational reform provides a reference guide for those who wish to study these proposals in depth. Reports included are: (1) "Academic Preparation for College" (College Board Project Equality); (2) "ACSA's Recommendations on Standards" (Association of California School Administrators); (3) "Action for Excellence" (Education Commission of the States); (4) "Educational Reform: A Response from Educational Leaders" (Forum of Educational Organization Leaders); (5) "Education and Economic Progress" (Carnegie Corporation); (6) "High School" (Ernest L. Boyer); (7) "Improving Student Performance in California: Recommendations for the California Roundtable"; (8) "Making the Grade: Report of the Twentieth Century Fund Task Force on Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Policy"; (9) "Merit Pay Task Force Report" (U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Labor); (10) "NASSP Develops Positions..." (National Association of Secondary School Principals); (11) "A Nation at Risk" (National Commission on Excellence in Education); (12) "The Paideia Proposal" and "Paideia Problems and Possibilities" (Mortimer J. Adler); (13) "A Place Called School" (John I. Goodlad); (14) "Raising Expectations: Model Graduation Requirements: Approved Unanimously by the California State Board of Education on June 10, 1983"; (15) "Senate Bill 813, Chapter 498 of the Statutes of 1983: The Hughes-Hart Education Act of 1983" (California State Legislature); and (16) "University of California Requirements for Freshman Admission (Effective 1986)." Part 1 discusses the proposals and their points of agreement, and includes charts showing their coverage of major issues. Part 2 contains a summary of each reform proposal, along with ordering information. In part 3, recommendations of all 16 proposals are compared by topic. Part 4 contains abstracts of selected school improvement reports, research studies, and subject-specific recommendations supplemental to the 16 main proposals. The final section provides a complete listing of the reports cited in parts 2, 3, and 4, plus a brief bibliography of useful background readings. (JD)
