Results of a survey of 180 community and junior colleges indicate that community college language programs continue to be largely connected with the transfer curriculum, and that their enrollments have declined in part as a consequence of the widespread erosion of language requirements among the B.A.-granting institutions to which community college students transfer. Language enrollments have held up well, however, in the larger, predominantly urban colleges where the student population is large enough to justify curricular diversity. Some community college faculty have been successful in developing career-oriented and community-related curricula to appeal to a wider student population. This report consists of a prose summary of research findings, a set of conclusions and policy recommendations to community college faculty and administrators, eleven tables, and curricular models.
