University Grants Commission, New Delhi (India).
The 1975-76 annual report of the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, India, is presented. Contents pertain to: institutions and enrollment in higher education; approach to fifth plan development programs of universities and colleges; development of universities; development of colleges; students; faculty improvement programs; cultural exchange programs and international collaboration; support for research; maintenance and coordination of standards; and facilities for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. During the 1975-76 year, various programs, which were initiated by the Commission for restructuring higher education and making it more relevant to national needs, were implemented by various universities. Programs concerned revising and updating the syllabi, examination reforms, faculty improvement programs, advanced level research, and nonformal and continuing education. During 1975-76, the number of students on rolls grew by 2.5 percent, compared to 5.9 percent in 1974-75, and 3.l percent in 1973-74. No new university was set up during the year. However, the number of new colleges increased from 85 during 1974-75 to 123 during 1975-76. Of these new colleges, 85 were arts, science, and commerce colleges; 10 were law colleges; and the remaining 28 were professional colleges, including colleges of Oriental learning. (SW)
