Career Spanish.
Tamarkin, Toby; Wilkins, Ernest J.
Supplemental materials are presented that can be used with any standard Spanish textbook in order to help students develop communicative competency by listening, understanding, and speaking in situations that involve the use of language outside the classroom. Career situations have been selected which require the use of Spanish in metropolitan areas within the United States. These materials are easily utilized by the entire class. They may serve as individualized, multi-media learning packets for junior-high or senior-high students, for two-year or four-year classes, and for adult language programs. The materials can be implemented as early as the second semester of the first year program. The basic objective of the students is to simulate the career roles that are presented in each lesson on film strip and audio cassette. The teacher then conducts a series of oral exercises in which an overhead transparency is used to help the students infer meaning, develop correct pronunciation patterns, and advance toward free expression in question-answer format. A detailed learning procedure is presented, but each student has the opportunity of using his own learning style. Some short work situations between Anglo-Americans and Mexican-Americans or Puerto Ricans are included. (SW)
