Gaps between developmental (mental or functional) age and chronological age -- serious delays may eventually be diagnosed as specific developmental disabilities, while less severe delays may catch up over time with normal development and disappear. Prior to June 1994, "Developmental Disabilities" was sometimes used to index this concept.
