Recruitment and Retention of Non-Caucasian Faculty in Southern Community Colleges: A Phenomenological Study

The increase in enrollment of African American, Hispanic, and Asian students in community colleges in the Southern parts of the United States of America sparked an interest in researching the hiring of non-Caucasian faculty in similar institutions and regions. This phenomenological study sought to unveil the personal experiences of non-Caucasian faculty currently employed at community colleges in the South in order to identify effective recruitment and retention strategies that may prove to be effective for other colleges and universities seeking to increase the diversity of their faculty population. Two research questions were developed to drive this study: What experiences directly led to the recruitment of non-Caucasian faculty with their current employer within a community college in the South? What experiences at a faculty's current employment with a community college in the South have influenced the faculty's retention at the current institution of higher learning? From these research questions, recruitment and retention strategies were unveiled through the interviewing on non-Caucasian faculty employed in the South. The faculty's experiences unveiled the importance of the following at community colleges in the South: word-of-mouth advertisement, friendly work environment, and meaningful relationships with supervisors and colleagues. The findings from this study indicated that there are several strategies that might be utilized by any institution seeking to increase the diversity of the faculty population.
