Report on the Evaluation of the Adult Literacy Action Campaign (ALAC).

This report presents findings of an evaluation of Australia's Adult Literacy Action Campaign (ALAC) to determine whether ALAC was promoting the development of communication, literacy, and numeracy skills and skills to facilitate greater and enriched participation in society. Chapter 1 sets out the methodology and approach, which included a literature review, data collection, case studies, and consultations. Chapter 2 lists the ALAC national level projects for 1988 and 1989 and discusses their significance. In chapter 3, a very brief statement of the existing adult literacy provision in each state is followed by an outline of each state's application of ALAC funds. Chapter 4 analyzes and assesses the use of ALAC funds in each state against 12 key issues. It attempts to extract trends, changes, and innovations in the provision of program delivery, staff development, research, and resources. Chapter 5 is a case study of the Workplace Basic Education program in Tasmania (Australia), which combines the government's objective of involving the private sector in education and training with the Adult Literacy and Basic Education Unit's objective of bringing basic education to disadvantaged individuals. Chapter 6 is a case study of the Women and Work Literacy Resource Kit produced with ALAC funds. Adult Literacy Through Videos, a major project undertaken in New South Wales (Australia), is the subject of chapter 7. Chapters 8 and 9 highlight conclusions and recommendations.
