A Woman's Job Search: Five Strategies for Success.
Reis, Susan L.
An alternate approach to traditional job search methods which may be helpful to women is presented. The following five strategies are considered: (1) know what you want; (2) develop a network of professional contacts to help identify the hidden job market; (3) be selective in the job search; (4) research job openings thoroughly before deciding to submit a formal application; (5) know how to promote yourself effectively. A basic requirement is to have an attitude of assertive confidence. Specific suggestions that can help the individual to act more assertively and feel more confident during job search are offered. It is essential as a first step to define interests, skills, and values. Resource books are noted that may be helpful in deciding what job areas an individual may want to pursue, and a work form is included that may help clarify the job objective. Steps necessary to develop a professional network, telephoning people that are identified through referral, and conducting personal information-gathering interviews effectively are covered. Charts showing written information resources and other resources for researching a specific job opening are included. (SW)
