Designed to encourage gifted students to develop their talents, the first issue in the volume focuses on academic competitions and includes articles on: "The Joys of Competition"; "Why Bother with Math Contests?" (Sam Vandervelde); "Science Competitions"; Humanities Competitions"; "Designing in Metal" (Cody Chance); and "Discovering My Chinese Self: Lessons in Brush Painting" (Jessica Kinlock). The second issue discusses planetary science and includes: "So You Want To Go to Mars" (John Connolly); "Moon, Earth, and Sea: A Cross Section of Planetary Sciences" (Jeff Gills and others); "In Search of M-Class Planets" (Carol Blackburn); "Space Camp: Where Fun and Learning Meet" (Katherine Yakubisin); and "To Live by the Sword: Modern Sport Fencing" (Kara Weinberg). Writing for publication is the focus of the third issue. Articles include: "On Becoming a Writer" (Health Jones); "Making Contact: Cover Letters & Query Letters" (Melissa Hartman); "To Observe, To Think, To Question, To Write" (Nick Sheff); "Penning the Impossible: Writing and Publishing Science Fiction and Fantasy" (Yoon Ha Lee); and "Resources for Writers". The fourth issue focuses on computer technology and includes: "Computer Technology: Reshaping Our Lives" (Jenko Hwong); "The Making of eBiz4Teens" (Melissa Sconyers); "Get with the Program: The USA Computing Olympiad" (Benjamin Matthews); and "The Science of Language: Computational Linguistics" (Jason Eisner); and "Look, Ma, No Hands: Living with Repetitive Stress Injury" (Vasugi Ganeshananthan). The fifth issue focuses on the social sciences. Each issue also includes information about exploring career options, planning ahead for college, college reviews, and book reviews. (CR)
