Literacy Is VITAL. Final Report.
Gillfillan, Nancy M.
Via an LSCA (Library Services and Construction Act) Title VI Library Literacy grant for fiscal year 1986, the Dixon (Illinois) Public Library expanded its involvement in the literacy effort. Additional rooms were made available for tutoring, materials and equipment for literacy students and books and equipment for literacy tutors were provided, public awareness of the literacy services was increased, and staff hours were expanded to better serve the literacy project. The library supports and cooperates with the literacy program at Sauk Valley Community College, and tutors trained there have been using the library to its capacity. Renovations to the library increased tutoring space, and teaching time rose from 33 to 120 hours per week. Materials purchased for the program included life-skills and high interest-low level readers for adults; courseware for use with two Apple IIe computers; and videocassette tapes and viewing equipment. A professional collection of books and videotape cassettes for tutors was also established. Library staff members were trained to work with tutors and students to provide optimum collection use. Emphasis was on promoting public awareness of the literacy problem and library materials and services. A copy of the program budget and a bibliography of library materials for use in the literacy program (with reading level indicated) are provided. (Author/EW)
