Science and Technology in Asian Development. Conference on the Application of Science and Technology to the Development of Asia (New Delhi, India, August, 1968).
United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, Paris (France).
The conclusions reached by commissions established by the Conference on the Application of Science and Technology to the Development of Asia, convened by UNESCO in 1968, are presented after brief descriptions of the present status of applied science and technology in 19 Asian countries. One commission studied social, economic, and cultural factors prerequisite for successful application of science and technology; a second considered the necessary improvements in science and mathematics education at the primary, secondary, and tertiary educational levels, including teacher training and retraining; the third examined problems of science policy as related to national planning, including the supply, distribution, and utilization of human, financial, and material resources. The third commission also considered the application of a mathematical model, with demographic, economic, and policy variables, designed to assist manpower planning and research and development needs. The model is described in a technical appendix. The recommendations resulting from discussion of the commission reports are included in the appropriate sections. Summary recommendations reflect a consensus on the most essential points for programs of action. (AL)
